W E L C O M E !

Happy New Year and welcome to a new year of my astronomy mailings. Instead
of swamping your mailboxes once a month with the mass of astronomy-related
mailings I collect, I thought it better to just compile them into one handy
mailing. And, it being my vacation time, I got bored and made a masthead,
one thing led to another, and voila, _The Armchair Astronomer_!

I don't know how long this will last, but if there's enough interest on
your part and initiative and energy on mine I'll keep it up as long as I
have an Internet connection.

My interests are as an "armchair astronomer." In other words, I own a
nice pair of binoculars but not a nice telescope; I'm outside for solar
eclipses and meteor showers but not for satellite tracking; I'm interested
in current theory and speculation about the origins of the universe, how
the dinosaurs were killed and just how badly CFCs hurt our ozone layer,
but I don't care about the wieght of the latest shuttle payload; and I
care about space exploration but not about where I can aim my nonexistant
satellite dish (there are other lists for that anyway).

I will compile things that I think are "interesting." If our interests
match, then stick around. If not, mail me at vanhoose@lalaland.cl.msu.edu to get
off of this list. As the list develops I'm sure I'll refine the purpose
of this list, but for now this should do. If you know of anyone else who
would be interested in this list, ask them to join by mailing me. If you
want off, please let me know also.

The most current issue of this publication is available for access via HTML
clients at URL: http://lalaland.cl.msu.edu/~vanhoose/astro/news.html.

If possible, individual articles will also be indexed at URL:
http://lalaland.cl.msu.edu/~vanhoose/astro.html.

Back issues can be found at URL:
http://lalaland.cl.msu.edu/~vanhoose/astro/newsMMYY.html
(".../news0195.html" for January 1995 for example).

Please direct all subscription requests and article submissions to:
vanhoose@lalaland.cl.msu.edu.

When making any inquries related to this list, please preface your subject
with "ASTRO: " so I can easily spot list-related mail.

I am interested in your feedback, so please send it to the above address
(I'll print it unless you request otherwise).

I have more ideas for this. I would like, for example, to include some
information that would be of use to my local (East Lansing) audience,
such as show times for our planetarium, observatory open house hours, etc.
If you'd like to help with these ideas, let me know.
