From: aplongo@amoco.com (Andy Longo) Newsgroups: alt.quotations Subject: Re: Attribution to Chief Seattle Date: 17 Apr 1995 13:47:34 GMTGreg, I have been a avid reader of Joseph Campbell ever since Bill Moyers did the six part interview with him at the Luke Skywalder ranch. The complete letter from Chief Seattle to the President is included in the transcript of the interviews...'Power of Myths'. I was deeply moved by this letter and have sent copies to people whom I thought might appreciate it. A couple of years later I was watching a program on public TV and it included a confession by a script writer. He had made a documentary film about the environment and was looking for some appropriate quotes from Native Americans. He could not find what he wanted so he composed the now famous letter. He did not attribute it to anyone, but someone did in the credits. He protested the error, but they all agreed who would notice. But the words touch many of hearts and people did notice. This story was also run on NPR. It was Chief Seattle's descendants who brought this error to light.
Thought you might appreciate a documented urban legend.
