When the French term was imported into English, by aphaeresis "double" ---> "ble." The rest was mis-pronunciation and translation error. GL.

The Sunday June 30th Tampa Tribune has a story about this and there is a reference to the old English word "belew" as meaning "betrayed" in that a blue moon betrays the rule that there is only one full moon a month. The Tampa TRibune has its own page for access but I am unsure of the address.
